=====================================

A recent article about preventing hackers from breaking

into your computer caused an overwhelming response by

readers.

It seems everyone has an opinion about the best software

and advice for keeping your computer safe from viruses and

online predators. The following will help you increase your

online security and usually without spending a dime!

Zone Alarm

Zone Alarm offers several versions of their

popular firewall software with various options for

increased security. The basic firewall software comes free

of charge and ranks among the most highly rated firewalls

available. The paid version helps you to eliminate

everything from pop-up windows to unwanted advertising and

also helps you track hackers back to their source.

Visit www.zonealarm.com to download your copy today,

especially if you don’t already carry a firewall on your

system.

The Guru Of Security

Visit www.grc.com if you want a real “eye opener!” Frankly,

some of the things I saw on this website shocked me. I had

no idea so many potential problems existed for breaches in

your online security.

But what also shocked me was how simple most of the “fixes”

rate for securing your computer against attack. It became

very apparent to me that most computer hackers don’t

exploit hardware or software weaknesses, they actually

exploit our ignorance about the simple steps we should take

to protect ourselves and others.

When you visit www.grc.com you’ll see the site covers a lot

of ground. Since you might find it easy to get sidetracked

with all the interesting information, make sure to

specifically check out the “Shields Up!” area. This section

offers two comprehensive tests of your Internet connection

to check for the typical points of entry used by hackers.

The first test, “Test My Shields,” checks the security of

your Internet connection itself and how much system and

personal information others can obtain without your

knowledge.

The second test, “Probe My Ports,” attempts to find open

ports on your computer and evaluate how and where a hacker

could enter.

Both tests will help you spot the most common and obvious

vulnerabilities most of us face when connected to the

Internet. Also to its credit (and unlike similar sites),

this website doesn’t use these tests as a lead-in to try to

sell you anything.

Free Anti-Virus Software

Visit www.grisoft.com to download a free anti-virus

software package that rivals anything you could buy. The

software comes with free updates on virus definitions

(critical for up-to-date protection) and will even certify

your outgoing email as virus free!

I have used this software myself and, though nothing rates

perfect, I have found it rivals products costing $50 or

more. If you don’t carry virus protection software on your

computer, stop this minute and go to www.grisoft.com to

download the free version now.

With so many resources and advice available for free, no

valid excuse exists for not immediately securing your

computer against hackers, vandals, viruses and malicious

code.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The ebook revolution is here! The Internet now makes it

possible to come up with an idea, turn it into an ebook,

distribute it over the Internet, and start making money - all

in 30 days or less. In the offline world, 30 days wouldn’t

typically even be long enough to start getting rejection letters

back from publishers. We say this with confidence because

we have both gone from book idea to book sales in a matter of

weeks - not once, but many times. Between us, we have 10 ebooks currently selling on the Net. Several of our books have brought us five figures in income. Jim holds the record between us with one release that made an astounding $43,000 in 30 days.

Here are two discouraging myths you should be aware of:

Myth #1 - It takes a lot of money to promote an ebook.

Fact: It doesn’t. Despite what anyone says to the contrary,

online information publishing is still the fastest, cheapest

and easiest way for the “little” guy to earn a nice living

online with virtually no risk and very little money (less than

$100).

Myth #2: You have to be a writer to make money with ebooks.

Fact: You don’t have to be a “writer” in order to create a best

selling ebook - and it often helps if you’re not!

Maybe you’ve heard that ebooks don’t sell. That’s not entirely a

myth; in a way, that’s true. What sells in bookstores will

generally not sell well on the Internet. Although author

J.K. Rowling has sold more than 100 million copies of her “Harry

Potter” books worldwide, it’s unlikely she would do well selling

her stories in ebook form.

But ebooks sell like hotcakes when they contain PRACTICAL information in ready-to-use form. Not pages of pages of long, flowing prose like you find at Borders and Barnes and Noble. On the Net, people buy step-by-step, cut-to-the-chase information they can use to solve problems in their everyday lives.

eBooks on how to negotiate the best price on a car, how to sell

your home without paying a real estate agent, how to build muscle mass quickly, and other narrowly focused topics that solve a problem, are selling VERY well - at this very moment!

Why is this so? Because the main reason people are online in the first place is to find information - 9 times out of 10, according to a landmark survey.

So if you can interest people in extending their search past

looking for free information into purchasing an information-rich,

well-organized, ready-made SOLUTION to a pressing problem, you can sell ebooks… You can sell a LOT of them.

Jim has sold more than 5,000 ebooks in the last 10 months.

David’s publishers have asked him not to reveal how many ebooks he’s sold, but just type his first and last name into Google and you’ll find more than 20,000 Web pages where his name appears. The vast majority of those pages have something to do with one of his ebooks.

One more thing: It doesn’t need to take very long to write an

ebook. Why? Because many “book books” are like encyclopedias in prose form - they cover everything imaginable about the topic.

eBooks aren’t like that. They go right to the meat of what people need to know to solve a problem. They have information about everything necessary to solve a problem, but no “filler”

information that takes so long to write - and takes readers so

long to sift through.

Here are four mistakes ebook authors make that typically reduce or prevent sales:

1. They don’t write to a specific, target audience.

The biggest mistake most ebook authors make is they don’t clearly define, identify and visualize who they are selling their ebook to. On the Web, to be successful, you must write to a specific group of people who have specific interests. Make sure that you know exactly who is going to buy your ebook, and where you can find them online.

2. They don’t automate as many of their business activities as

possible. Selling ebooks, though it is highly profitable, is not

a business where you make hundreds of dollars per sale.

Automate everything you can - credit card processing, ebook

delivery, as much technical support as possible.

3. They don’t have a compelling title for their ebook.

Use words that convey the benefit of what’s in the ebook, as

well as words your audience is familiar with.

A bad title for an ebook: “Online Marketing for Newbies.” A good

title for the same ebook: “97 Ways to Promote Your Website - No Experience Required.”

4. They try to cover too much ground.

Many ebook authors convey a lot of information but don’t cover

anything in-depth. As a result, they never fully explain anything

in enough detail to provide any useful value to their readers.

As long as you are aware of these mistakes and put in a little

effort to avoid them, your chances of success are VERY high.

So, if you know a lot about something - or even if you don’t -

you can put together and market an ebook quickly, and make a lot of money quickly as well. The large traditional publishers may

never understand or agree with this, but that’s actually to your

benefit. It keeps the playing field level and offers you, the entr

epreneurial author, unlimited opportunities for many years to come.

Get Life Skills - Not Student Loans

—————

Student loans? Who needs them? Take charge of your money for the rest of your life.

=================

Part I Avoid student loan consolidation by avoiding debt (this is part I)

Part II Student loan consolidation has big benefits for losers

Part III Idea beats student loan consolidation and creates a winning mindset.

==================

You’ll never need student loans with these ideas.

1.Grants in place of student loans - no repayments

2. Part time earning decreases student loans

3. Economising (builds life skills) avoids some student loans

—————-

1. Grants - Supreme way to avoid student loans

—————-

A grant is a gift of money that you don’t have to repay. Isn’t a $50000 grant better than taking out student loans every year for four or five years?

There is a club that keeps its members abreast of grants that they might use. You can avoid student loans. These grants aren’t confined to education so you aren’t confined to avoiding student loans. If you get a grant, save actively to build a nest egg and the right mindset.

—————–

2. Part Time Earning

—————–

There are lots of ways for you to work your way through college. What I like is that they encourage an aggressive "go and get it" mindset. Student loans encourage the "wait for it to come to me" mindset.

I have details of how a teenage girl made a profitable website. She’ll never need student loans!

One girl runs dogs. That’s right, she runs for half an hour with 4 dogs that need lots of exercise, then picks up the next 4 dogs.

Don’t lose sight of your target. You want to avoid student loans, not impress your friends with how much you can spend.

————–

3. Economising

————–

I had a grant for University. Fellow students complained their student loans or college grants were too small. I saved money from the grant by economising.

A dollar saved is four dollars earned. You pay back about twice as much as you borrow, with money from which the IRS has stolen 50%. So each dollar you save avoids earning four.

You can economise on these and have better health.

1. Food

2. Lodgings

3. Health

4. Transport

5. Social life

——-

1. Food.

——-

Learn to cook. You’re at the mercy of food suppliers until you can cook. One student got into the news because student loans only covered tinned dog-food for him to eat. That’s too expensive! I’m cooking my own food and eating well on about$17 per week.

———-

2.Lodgings

———-

I can only suggest that you shop around. Remember that $20 saved per week is $1000 saved from your student loans each year even without interest payments.

——–

3. Health

——–

The damage you do to your body adds up over your lifetime, so it’s a good idea to stay healthy. What has that to do with student loans?

It turns out that fast food is bad for your health, and so are most processed foods, and cooking your own food means that you can avoid trans-fatty acids, sugar, and all the other things that cause obesity. Curry, broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, brazil nuts, and cabbage among other things fight cancer. And they all make less demands on student loans.

———-

4.Transport

———-

Make enquiries. How much would you save from your student loans by buying a bike instead of a car? Would public transport be better? Would walking or running for exercise be even better? How much would it cramp your style for dating?

Remember, buying a car with a student loan involves not only repayments, but fuel and oil, repairs, licensing, and depreciation. I travelled 2 hrs/day on my pushbike getting exercise and no college loans.

———–

5. Social Life

———–

Look for free pastimes. If your friends aren’t interested in ways to avoid college loans perhaps you have the wrong friends.

If you finish study at 25 and work till 60 that gives you a working life of 35 years. So a 25 year student loan takes a big chunk out of your life, even if you are never unemployed.

And that’s before you take out a mortgage!

———————–

Other ways to economise

———————–

Buy second-hand whenever possible - even your textbooks. Clothes from the Salvation Army are cheap. Use eBay, but don’t buy anything you don’t need. My first boss said I’d furnished my house for less than he spent on his bedroom.

Negotiate - Important for second hand, even more for new goods. When you go in to buy a new fridge, the attendant waits to see if you’re stupid enough to pay the price tag, or ask for a discount.

Remember a dollar saved is four dollars in student loans that you won’t have to pay back.

Home Study: What Life-enhancing Skill do You Learn?

———————

You’re already doing unofficial home study when you research a project online. Study in class has its place, but…

Up to date I’ve done many courses in classrooms but only two were very useful. I’ve learned most of the useful stuff from books or the Internet.

———————–

What will help you most in life?

———————–

The most valuable thing you learn at school is to write an essay. Essays help you organise your thoughts. An essay helps you convince people. Your

feedback in a home study course will mostly be essays. This will encourage you to write a good essay.

Many years ago I read about Electronics, and took a correspondence course on the subject, and made electronic gadgets for where I worked.

Then I decided to study Electronics at college. Unfortunately the nearest I could get to it was Physics with Electronics as the main subject, so I qualified in Physics.

The lecturers were shockingly out of date. One of my classmates and I spent a lot of time instructing the lecturers. We’d learned modern stuff from books and practical use.

It has been said “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” What this means is that lecturers sat through lectures and passed exams. They go on to teach what they learned in these lectures - which is already out of date. That’s the first benefit of home study.

———————————–

Three advantages of classroom study

———————————–

1. You can get recognised certificates when you

pass exams

2. You can get a useful plan for what to study

3. Facilities for practical work

You’ll have noticed that although I learned more from my home study course, I still did a four-year course at college. I couldn’t get recognised exam certificates from correspondence courses. That was the main benefit.

If you want to study genetics and you don’t even know what a gene is, you obviously don’t know enough to plan a syllabus for your home study.

You get a useful skeleton outline from your lectures. Using my book about exams you will learn how to improve on the skeleton, but you need one

to improve on!

At home you don’t have a chemistry laboratory or a machine shop or volunteers to practice dentistry.

Apprenticeships let you learn about real life from an employer. Schools and colleges have labs and workshops for you to do your practical work.

Lecturers don’t know as much about practical work as an employer would. I hated doing chemical titrations because they took such a long time.

Then I noticed that one of my classmates took about a quarter of the time, with greater accuracy. He worked during his holidays at a chemistry lab. He showed me the tricks and I was soon flying through my titrations too.

Even if you do have a machine shop at home, you’ll be taught safe working procedure in a conventional course. That could save you from being a cripple for the rest of your life.

—————-

Instant Feedback

—————-

When I was about to hold a chunk of metal with a rag wrapped round my hand to give me extra grip, my lecturer yelled a warning. That probably kept me from losing my hand.

Even if you’re learning something safe like oil painting, you can learn faster with instant feedback from a lecturer strolling around behind the students.

Oh, you could take a digital photograph of your oil painting and shoot it down the line to an instructor, but she could be having a meal, or even be asleep if she is on the other side of the world. So you still won’t have instant feedback.

Writing essays works fine.

———————————-

Conventional courses for abilities

———————————-

It seems that conventional courses win out when you want to develop an ability, unless your parents already have that ability to pass on to you.

—————–

Knowledge courses

—————–

Of course, there are knowledge courses such as English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology where you don’t have a practical syllabus. These are

ideal for home study, and perfect for using an essay as a tool.

More and more Universities offer online courses. You can get recognised certificates with home study. You just need to be good at writing an essay (see my free report) and a few other exam techniques to succeed.

Even technical courses have lots of theory. University extension courses allow you to study the theory online. Then you just go to college for your practical work.

————

Distractions

————

A friend of mine refused to be distracted by girls or parties or sport until he completed his degree as a dentist.

I don’t think I could have overcome these distractions. If you do home study you don’t have any distractions.

Conclusion:

I prefer home study any time that it is available. However you can’t learn to sing, or karate, or dentistry without a teacher, so conventional study is often needed to supplement home study. Essay writing is particularly useful in home study.

Large or Small Businesses Profit Through Ad Tracking
By Jeffrey Jordan, Copyright 2002
————————————————————

What do Sprint and Net Marketing Results have in common?

Hum…one is a Fortune 500 company the other is a small
company (under $100 million). One is in the telecommunications
business the other is in the information and services business.
There might be some overlap there…but not the answer I was
looking for.

Give-up?

There is something that we both do unfailingly and with a
passion…

We both Track and Test ALL of our advertising. Both online
and traditional media, creative, response rates, clickthrough
rates, conversion rates, ROI, campaign costs, sales, etc. For
some of you this is no surprise, for others it may be a shock.

Why?

1) It is the ONLY WAY you will maximize your profits!
2) It is the ONLY WAY you will maximize your profits!
3) Put another way, if you don’t you will just LOSE MONEY!

Worst yet its like throwing money into a swirling wind and
then trying to find it. Some went north, some went south, but
you don’t know how much or which direction you should go get
get the most back. You just run in circles.

Everyday I find out new approaches regarding what works and
what doesn’t, how to make advertising better and what makes
it worse. Tracking Ads and applying the insights makes
and saves me $1,000’s every single month.

For example, I have never been a big fan of FFA and Classified
Postings. But I decided to give World Submitter a try (posting
by hand would be too time consuming) to automate the postings
to the FFA, Classifieds and Search sites.

Well to my amazement I get between 1,500 and 1,700 visitors
a month, 110 - 150 newsletter subscribers and 1 - 4 orders.
What does this mean? Well, depending on the product I will
make between $9 to $99 per order, subscribers would cost
about $0.15 each through a registration service and the
visitors would be about $0.005 per clickthrough.

So for $19.95/month I get:

Min Max
Sales……….$9.00 $496.00
Visitors…….$7.50 $ 8.50
Subscribers…$16.50 $ 22.50
——– ———
Total………$33.00 $527.00

*—————–HOT TIP——————*
You can use the Free Version of World Submitter to see how
it works for you.
Go to http://www.netmarketingresults.com/ws/
Remember to track your ads!
*—————–HOT TIP——————*

I have a front-end profit of between $10.05 and $506.95 per
month with just this one technique and more will come on the
backend. If I didn’t track the ads, I would have never known
that this would be a profitable strategy. And this is just one
method!

Ad Tracking enable you to test your sales and ad copy, banners
or almost anything that you are expecting a response. Then
improve it to gain greater results.

You can also integrate adtracking with direct mail. When you
print your direct mail piece use your adtracking URL to direct
your prospects to your website and you will automatically track
their response.

Here are a few places that you can use Ad Tracking:

* Article Submissions
* Search Engines
* Email newsletters
* Opt-in email ads
* Pay-per-click ads
* Classifieds
* Bulletin boards
* Email signature files
* Message boards
* Reseller programs
* Autoresponders
* FFA links pages,
* Newsgroup postings
* Pop-up advertising
* Network marketing,
* Joint ventures
* Reciprocal links
* eBook marketing,
* Banner ads
* Affiliate programs, Press releases,
* Giveaway contests
* Shareware downloads
* Viral marketing
* Direct mail

As you can see, there are many opportunities whether you are
large or small to improve your profits through tracking. Don’t
wait to put more money in your pocket!

EFFICACY, EFFICIENCY AND PROFITABILITY IN AVIATION
BUSINESS

“How to” determine the efficiency and profitability in
a projected aviation business, is in fact a
challenging work requiring several steps of rational
and logical reasoning.
I hereby would like to put forward some guidelines for
you to be taken into account, as a very first step of
an aviation entrepreneur.

1. The factors effecting efficacy, efficiency and
profitability in commercial aviation:

a. Human factor : The spirit of aviation,
attitude, interest and loyalty of employees are of
utmost importance.
Start with selecting the proper employees among the
applicants consistent with the projected standarts and
conditions of the aviation business.
The employees are able to boost your business or vice
versa.
Select your initial management team carefully, among
the well-known, intelligent and honest persons having
the capacity of leadership as well.
Most of the time, honesty tends to be bilateral.
Remember, human have a sense of propriety and
rightness that’s called “conscience”.
b. Environmental factors: Consider the;
I ) meteorological factors and climatic
conditions of projected hubs and destinations,
II) tourist industry cross effects on
scheduling of projected destinations and timetables.
III) take into account the well-known
historical and/or resort values of projected locations
of your intended area of flight operations.
c. Facilities and air assets:
Consider the;
I) Types of air assets: Types, quality,
speed, range ,roominess and comfort of aviation assets
(airplanes, jetliners, commercial jets, helicopters
etc.) in accordance with the projected aviation
business and financial resources.

II) Performance and management of Ground
operations.
Set forth the standarts for efficient ground
operations to support and soar your projected aviation
business. Again, the initial selection for the right
guys to be suited in the teams of management and
operations is of utmost importance.

III) Quality of ATC control facilities of
projected operations area.
Undoubtedly, thanks to the preceding leadership of
Europe and North America, throughout most of the
continents in today’s world, up-to-date and
well sophisticated ATC services are enjoyed by the
world aviators.

Nevertheless, in addition to the difficulties
encountered over the underdeveloped
air-route sections of the world, the total increased
and almost congested volume of today’s air traffic
around the world, decreases the chances for direct
route availability, as well as the chances for
reaching the company flight plan cruise altitudes.

Any increased ground mile and/or any decreased flight
altitude, increases fuel burn, as well as cross
financial burdens of aviation companies, and pollute
the world, damage the ozone layer and contribute the
greenhouse effect.

IV) Spirits, attitudes and performances of
flight crew (Commanders, i.e. captains in charge,
co-captains, first officers, i.e. co-pilots) and
flight attendants (cabin crew).

V) Quality and efficacy of training facilities
for flight crew, flight attendants, ground operations
and technical personnel.

VI) Quality and efficacy of maintenance
facilities and personnel.

VII) Catering, servicing and additional inputs to
the projected efficiency of commercial aviation
business.

2. Determining the level of efficiency and the cost
index desired:

To set forth a harmonious cost index; “flight and
ground safety, speed, time, cost, financial sources
available” must be taken into account.

There is one condition unforgettable here;
Never forget! ; “the speed” is the core (heart) of
“aviation business”,
nevertheless “flight safety” precedes.

3. Possible difficulties and/or obstacles to be
encountered on the quest of desired efficiency.

Consider the;
a. Unexpected crisis/crises, significant events or
radical changes of status quo, unstable or crucial
times or state of affairs in the regions of operations
area or in the world theatre (as in September the 11th
2001 attack to WTC/NY).

b. Expected or unexpected financial crises in the
Country/ies where the entrepreneur/s is/are based.(as
in the global recession of 2000-2001-….)

c. Future problems those may arise due to
mismanagement, mishandling of company personnel and
assets and possible recovery plans thereof.

d. Fluctuations in the worldwide and regional fuel
prices.
Unexpected hikes due to political crises.

e. Taxes and other burdens.

f. Possible future unfortunate
accidents/incidents/unlawful interference occurences
in your aviation business and mitigating the effects
therefrom.

4.Proceeding to the targeted efficiency.

Having considered all of the above mentioned
particulars, you can proceed to your targeted
efficiency in your business, with your well selected;
flight, cabin and ground crew, maintenance personnel
and again well selected, honest, loyal and in-focus
management personnel.

There is a simple but important point that you should
remember as the heart of aviation business;
“have your personnel believe to the honesty and
neutrality of your selected management team to support
them”.
I would even suggest you, in the proper upcoming
phases of your ongoing business and if you feel
comfortable, to let your personnel select their own
management team with elections or polls. Than believe
me every personnel from top to buttom shall be careful
about every single actions of behavior, flight
maneuver, speech, attitude whatever you name it, that
would cost a penny more to their company’s aviation
business.
Remember; “aviation, is expensive and costly. However,
careful attentions to simple details, attentive
approaches and attitudes, shall sum up big gains”.

Indeed, life is hiddens in details. Simple motivation
details provided to your aviation personnel come
bounce back as in two-fold gains. Believe me and try
this out. You won’t regret.

In the quest for targeted efficiency, another very
imported point is the deligation of the power of the
management.

“Deligate your power, but still stay centralized.”
This means; deligate your power of management on
flight and ground operations, maintenance etc.
Keep them very well coordinated under the superior
management of one very well selected chief executive
officer.
As the president you shall be always at the top with
your board. Monitor and check the performance of your
business. Regular or irregular checks shall work-out
fine. Arrange, re-arrange your team when necessary.

Think about this: “Flying the aircraft efficiently and
in harmony” is the main and ultimate reason of your
business. Then, why not to select the top executive
officer under your CEO among your seasoned pilots as
the CEOTAO (Chief Executive Officer of Total Aviation
Operations) to manage and control your total aviation
activities in one hand.
While your CEO and/or the chief of board, should
preferably be an expert of management and/or finance.

Well, as far as the possible designs and schemas of
projected aviation organizations are concerned, those
can be the topic of another arti
cle.

Change Wood Into Gold

By Stephen Bucaro

Today, everything is a cold plastic manufactured product.
In the “old days”, everything was painstakingly
hand-crafted from wood. People love the quality and warmth
of hand-crafted wood products. If you like to work with
your hands, you can profit from the demand for these
products.

If you are inexperienced with woodworking, you can start
by making simple scroll saw puzzles and wood toys. You can
see some examples of the type of products you can make at
http://home.att.net/~brad247 where Brad sell’s them for
$4.00 to $9.00.

You will find free downloadable patterns at the Skill
Power Tools Web site:
http://www.skil.com/projects/projects.htm
or you can purchase patterns like “The Little Choo Choo”
at the Wood Toys and Joys Web site:
http://www.toysandjoys.com

When you get a little more skill, you can make the kind of
products sold at the Wood Expression’s Web site:
http://www.woodexpression.com
For example, they sell a 19 x 21 inch oak shelf for $30.00.
The Wooden Wood Art Web site:
http://www.woodlandmanufacturing.com
sells beautiful wood letter signs for $4.00 to $5.00. They
also sell custom personalized signs. Check out:
http://familysigns.com where they sell cute crafty
personalized wood signs for $10.00 and up.

When you advance to larger, higher quality work you might
make products like those offered by The Woodcrafting Co. at
http://www.thewoodcraftingco.com where they sell hardwood
TV trays and display cases for $700.00 and more.

You will find hundreds of woodworking project plans at the
WoodcraftPlans.com web site:
http://www.scrollsaw.com for $10.00 and up. A good source
for quality hardwoods, woodworking materials, power and
hand tools, is Woodworkers Source
http://www.woodworkerssource.net which has stores in
Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona.

Tips for a wood craft products Web site:

- On your Web site, highlight the fact that you can
make custom and personalized wood craft products.
Customization is what puts your work a step above
manufactured products, and allows you to charge a premium
price.

- You can generate extra profits by selling kits, patterns
and instructions that let your fellow woodworkers copy
your wood craft products. You will be surprised how many
people who bought a pattern will return later to purchase
a finished poduct.

- It is very important to display good pictures of your
products on your web site, but one problem I frequently
find at wood craft product sites is a total disregard for
Web page load times. Most people access the web over a 56K
dial-up connection. The size of a Web page, including all
the images displayed on the page, should be less than
200 KBytes.

People yearn for the quality and warmth of hand-crafted
wood products. Don’t limit your sales to your Web site.
Hand-crafted wood products are one of the premier items
sold at Web auction sites, craft fairs and craft malls.
If you like to work with your hands, you can turn wood
into gold!

Pick a City - any City

By Stephen Bucaro

Operating your own city guide on the Web can be interesting
and very profitable. Almost every city already has at
least one city guide. But there is always room for one
more. For example, I live near Phoenix, Arizona. I could
call my site “The Best Guide to Phoenix”, “The Official
Guide to Phoenix”, or “The Complete Guide to Phoenix”.

How do you generate revenue from a city guide? 1. You
charge a fee to list restaurants, accommodations, and
other businesses that are located in the city. 2. You sell
books and videos about the city, and city souvenirs and
mementos.

You should develop your city guide in phases.

Phase 1. Create the non-commercial sections of the Web
site. Some cities, like Chicago and New York, are popular
for their cultural attractions. Some cities, like Phoenix,
are popular for nearby natural attractions. Some cities
are popular for their artisans, monuments, or history.
Create an attractive front page that displays photographs
related to the unique attractions of the city.

Develop an “Attractions” section of your Web site. You
might also want to develop a “Maps” section. When you have
a reasonable amount of content, begin promoting your city
guide to start generating some traffic.

Phase 2. Create the commercial sections of the Web site.
You should develop an “Accommodations” section, a
“Restaurants” section, and a “Businesses” section. You
might also want to develop a “Search” section.

Contact all the large businesses that you want to list in
your city guide and offer them free listing. Yes - free.
In order to get things rolling, you will have to fill up
the commercial sections by offering free listing. Don’t
tell them you are going start charging as soon as you get
the sections filled out.

This is how you approach the business owners; “I’m
developing a new city guide web site and I’m listing every
important business in the city for free. Can you provide
me with some information about your establishment?” People
have less resistance to free, and this will get you access
to the decision makers of the businesses.

Phase 3. You contact every business listed in your city
guide and ask them if they want to renew their listing for
one year for $1 (or some incredibly low fee). You can
also approach businesses not yet listed with the offer to
list them for the same incredibly low fee.

If you were a restaurant owner or hotel manager looking at
a guide that has all your competitors listed, wouldn’t you
be willing to pay a small fee to remain in the guide? The
reason that you have such a low fee is because you want
your customers to take the important leap from a free
listing to a paid listing.

Phase 4. After their renewal expires, you present each
business with your listing options for the next year. You
can offer anything from a small advertisement to a
multi-page Web site. You are now an established city guide.
Even your minimal listing - an entry in the search section
only - costs $50.00 to $500.00 or more per year. The leap
from paid to a price increase is not as wide as the leap
from free to paid.

The potential earnings from a Web city guide varies with
the size and popularity of the city. Even a small town
with some attraction should provide you with a moderate
income. A large city with many popular attractions could
earn you much more.
